Choosing courses abroad

Ask prior approval for your electives abroad from the FPN Board of Examiners through this form:
Request for approval electives abroad Fall 2024

See this page for a list of previously approved electives abroad.
Disclaimer: no rights can be derived from this overview. You have to ask approval from the Board of Examiners for each individual course. The courses listed may not be offered next year. Also note that this overview only lists courses that have been chosen by FPN students in the past years and therefore doesn't represent the entire course offer. Always refer to the universities' websites for up-to-date information.

Requirements for an elective period abroad in Fall 2024
In order to get the official approval from the Board of Examiners to take electives abroad, you need to meet the elective abroad requirements*:
- all first-year courses have been passed (60 ECTS);
- all second-year courses of periods 1, 2 and 3 have been passed (including Skills education) in periods 1, 2, and 3.
- the ‘research participation‘ (SONA) has been completed (at the latest 6 weeks before the start of the exchange semester).

*Students who didn't (yet) meet the requirements have been selected on a provisional basis. If you fail the resit, you may want to consider making use of compensation. If you fail to meet the requirements, kindly inform the FPN IRO. We will cancel your elective abroad period (without (financial) consequences). In July 2024, the FPN Board of Examiners will check whether all Fall 2024 students meet the requirements. Students who are not eligible will be informed by e-mail.

Information about courses abroad
On the partner universities’ information pages you can find information about the courses offered at each university. This can be a link to the host university's website, or (a direct link to) the course list. In the essays of former exchange students, students also write a short evaluation on the courses they followed. If the course offer for the semester concerned is not yet available, refer to this year's course list (subject to (minor) changes).
The exchange agreements we have are generally in the field of Psychology/Social Sciences. FPN partner universities may however allow you to take courses in other disciplines/at other faculties (or even courses at master's level). See partner universities' information pages.
 Some universities explicitly mention the option to take electives in other fields. Do check the prerequisites (if any)!

Course approval by FPN Board of Examiners
You need to submit each course for approval to the FPN Board of Examiners through the online request for approval form (at top of this page), at the latest 6 weeks before the start of your exchange semester. You have to ask approval for each individual course (even if it concerns a course that has been approved in the past) to make sure all credits are recognized after return!

The electives abroad should meet the following requirements:
- The elective should be at the level of second-year bachelor or higher;
- the content should not overlap with mandatory courses of the FPN bachelor programme;
- the content should be related to the objectives of the FPN bachelor programme.

Based on the course description, the Board of Examiners will assess if the course meets the FPN intended learning outcomes. You can however take courses that are not strictly psychology courses, on condition there is some relation to psychology or to improving academic skills (e.g. methods & techniques, writing, programming etc.) This means that courses which relate to e.g. behavioral economics, biology, philosophy, sociology etc. may be accepted by the Board of Examiners. However, no approval is given if the course is too 'distant' from psychology or overlaps considerably  with courses at FPN.
