Grade Point Average (GPA)

The Grade Point Average (GPA) is a composite score based on multiple measurements (i.e., exam scores) and as such is believed to be a valid predictor of academic achievement. You can see your current GPA in the student portal. When we add new grades, your recalculated GPA will appear the next day.

When is the GPA relevant?
The GPA is relevant for graduating with a judicium.  Also, it may be relevant for selection procedures regarding the selective programmes that are extracurricular to or part of the Bachelor programme, e.g., the Honours programme, and the MaRBLe programme or in the context of e.g., the admission procedure for the selective Master’s programmes (Research Master/Forensic Master).

It may also be relevant in job applications or in obtaining PhD positions. Moreover, the first-year GPA of the bachelor may be considered for the allocation of universities during the selection for electives abroad. For more information, see 'IRO

How to calculate the GPA?
A GPA is calculated for all parts of the curriculum which are assessed on a ten-point scale (numerical grade), with the exception of the FPN electives, electives taken at other universities and the honours programme. Scores will be weighted according to the number of module credits. The GPA is rounded off to the first two decimals.

(numerical grade * number of ECTS) +
(numerical grade * number of ECTS) +
(numerical grade * number of ECTS) +
etc.
---------------------------------- +
The sum of the multiplications
      / (divided by)
the sum of the total number of ECTS = GPA

Getting a provisional transcript
During your studies, you can obtain a provisional transcript with GPA. If you need a provisional transcript with a GPA, send a message via AskPsy.nl.

What is included in the GPA on a provisional transcript?
The GPA on a provisional transcript includes in principle all achieved numerical grades which are assessed on a ten-point scale, including insufficient numerical grades. Therefore also unsuccessfully completed modules, that resulted in an insufficient numerical grade, are calculated in the GPA of a transcript. In case of second exams/resits, the highest numerical grade will be considered when calculating the GPA.

What is not included in the GPA on a provisional transcript?
Although the results of electives and the honours programme (if applicable) are numerical grades which are assessed on a ten-point scale and stated on the transcript, they are not included in the GPA. An exam that has not been taken should not be included in the calculation of the GPA. Exemptions are also not included in the calculation of the GPA. Both should not be included in the (numerical grade x number of ECTS), nor in the sum of total number of ECTS of the calculation mentioned above.

Final transcript
Together with your diploma, you will receive a final transcript with a GPA. Please note: on a final Bachelor’s transcript a GPA will only be registered when at least 60 ECTS have been obtained for courses/modules included in the GPA.

A final transcript contains only modules for which credits have been obtained. Based on the EER the Board of Examiners determines if a judicium will be awarded to a Bachelor’s or Master’s diploma.  Please see the Education and Examination Regulations for more information about the judicium.

What is included in the GPA on a final transcript?
The final transcript includes all achieved numerical grades which are assessed on a ten-point scale, with the exception of electives and the honours programme. Only successfully completed modules (or modules that are compensated) are included in the GPA on a final transcript.
