Attendance Obligation

For many courses and practicals in our bachelor and master programmes, attendance is part of the course assessment. The attendance requirement means that you must attend (a percentage of) the sessions. The minimum attendance requirement varies according to the type of session and programme. The formal regulations can be found in the Rules & Regulations

Important: attendance is not part of the course examination for 1st year bachelor Psychology students starting in cohort 2024-2025.

If you do not meet the attendance requirement, you will not be able to pass the exam, resit or course. If you have passed the exam or resit, your exam result will be cancelled.
If you have already passed the attendance requirement but failed the exam(s), you can attend tutorial group sessions again to prepare for a resit, see Repeat Education. If you enrol for revision, you will be expected to attend all sessions as a regular student.

Be on time

You must be on time for your attendance to count. There is no '10 minute' grace period. An instructor/tutor may deny you access to a tutorial, workshop or practical if you are not on time; this applies to all students.

Remotely joining a tutorial meeting

In most cases it is possible to follow a tutorial online (hybrid) if you are unable to attend on campus, but this online participation will not count as 'present' for the attendance requirement. If you wish to attend online, please contact your tutor well in advance.

 No requirements

Attendance requirements have yet to be determined for the bachelor Brain Science.

For bachelor students: reporting absence, attending session elsewhere.

You may only miss a tutorial group meeting if you inform the tutor in person, at the latest on the day of the meeting.

At the beginning of the course, the coordinator will announce whether it is possible to attend missed sessions in another tutorial group. If this is the case, you should contact the tutor of that group and they will decide whether you can join their group for that session.  Please note that your attendance record will not change, only your attendance in your assigned tutorial group will count!

Attendance registration in Canvas "Roll Call"

Canvas is used to register attendance in the tutorial. Tutors mark someone as 'present' or 'absent' in the so-called 'Roll Call' module.

For bachelor Psychology students cohort 2024-2025, attendance is also recorded in Canvas but, as mentioned above, is not part of the course examination.

If you go to 'Grades > Roll Call Attendance' you will see an overview of the total number of days registered (either 'absent' or 'present') and a list of days marked as 'absent'.  Your tutor is the first person to contact if you have any questions about registering your attendance.  Want to know more? See the Canvas attendance registration for tutors page for more information.

Adjustments can be made to accommodate two studies. However, working while studying is not considered a valid reason for requesting preferential scheduling. Students must adhere to the 8:30 - 18:00 study hours and plan their work shifts accordingly.

Preferential scheduling in exceptional circumstances

If you have exceptional personal circumstances* which warrant preferential treatment in terms of tutorial group times, you must notify the Academic Advisers by email (bachelors: fpn-academicadv-ba@maastrichtuniversity.nl / masters: fpn-academicadvisers-ma@maastrichtuniversity.nl) as soon as possible (at least one week before the course period). Following this notification, the Academic Advisers will determine whether you are eligible for such an individual arrangement. If you require structural accommodation, you will need to apply to Disability Support for an 'Advice Allocation Facilities'. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Academic Advisers.

* Such circumstances may include (chronic) illness, disability, participation in top -level sports or (urgent) family circumstances.
